Copa Promesas 2026: Growing youth football in Peru

In 2026, Copa Promesas is doing more than maintaining a competitive structure that brings together hundreds of young footballers in Peru. Organized by Club Universitario de Deportes, the tournament is entering a new stage, one focused on creating more opportunities to compete, develop and showcase emerging talent.

Growth does not always mean becoming bigger.

In youth football, it can also mean making every match more meaningful, giving players more opportunities to be seen, and creating an increasingly professional experience for everyone involved.

That is the path Copa Promesas has taken in Peru.

Organized by Universitario de Deportes, Copa Promesas is entering a new stage in 2026, adding a women’s edition and using Torneo by Sofascore to give young players more exposure.

After proving in 2025 that its competitive model could bring together some of the country’s strongest youth academies, 2026 has been a year of consolidation. The structure remains in place, but its reach continues to expand. Copa Promesas is becoming much more than a youth tournament.

It is evolving into a platform that brings together competition, development and exposure for young players.

The Copa Promesas format: divisions, promotion and relegation

Under Universitario’s organization, Copa Promesas has built its reputation around three key elements: the level of its participating teams, its facilities, and an organizational structure designed to provide an increasingly professional environment.

In 2026, the men’s competition brings together approximately 124 teams and 2,000 players across the 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 age categories.

The tournament features three divisions, Elite, Gold and Silver, as well as a promotion and relegation system that gives teams an additional objective beyond winning individual matches: moving up through the competition.

Elite and Gold feature 10 teams per age category, while Silver includes six teams per category, with the exception of the 2014 age group.

Each edition follows a round-robin format before moving into the semifinals and final. And rather than being a single annual competition, Copa Promesas runs two men’s editions each year: Apertura and Clausura.

The formula that worked in 2025 did not need to be reinvented. In 2026, the focus has been on strengthening it.

From competition to platform with Torneo by Sofascore

The most significant evolution of Copa Promesas is not necessarily reflected in the number of teams taking part, but in what happens around each match.

A youth football game may last 90 minutes, but its impact can extend well beyond the final whistle.

Through the digitalization of the competition, every match can also become a source of information: live scores, squads, goals, cards, substitutions and statistics that provide a clearer picture of what is happening on the pitch.

That is where Torneo by Sofascore has become an important partner for Copa Promesas.

The platform allows organizers to manage the competition more efficiently, while teams, families, players and fans can follow match information in real time.

But its impact goes beyond simplifying the day-to-day operation of the tournament.

For Copa Promesas, having a professional digital presence also means giving greater exposure to the competition and the people who are part of it.

That visibility can create new opportunities, from attracting teams from different parts of Peru to encouraging brands to get involved in boys’ and girls’ youth football.

In other words, data is no longer simply a management tool. It becomes part of the story surrounding each player and each match.

A women’s edition of Copa Promesas for female talent

Copa Promesas’ evolution can also be seen in who gets the opportunity to take part.

In 2026, the competition is introducing an annual women’s edition, beginning on October 31 and bringing together approximately 500 players across the 2012, 2014 and 2016 age categories.

A total of 24 teams will compete in a single division, with a group stage followed by semifinals and a final.

It adds a new dimension to a competition that continues to broaden its reach, creating more spaces for young female players to compete, develop and showcase their abilities.

Growing youth football in Peru with purpose

Perhaps the best way to understand Copa Promesas’ evolution between 2025 and 2026 is this: the goal has not been to grow simply for the sake of numbers, but to strengthen what the competition offers.

The tournament has maintained a structure that has already proven its ability to deliver high-level competition and bring together talented young players. At the same time, it has continued to professionalize its management, digitize results and statistics, and increase the exposure surrounding its participants.

The result is a more complete experience for everyone involved, from clubs and organizers to players, families, fans and sponsors.

Because young players need more than a place to compete.

They also need a stage where their effort can be seen.

Raising the standard for the next generation

In 2025, Copa Promesas demonstrated that its competitive model could bring together young talent and provide a high-level environment for them to compete.

In 2026, the challenge has been different: to consolidate that model and raise its standard.

Every match now generates more information. Players have greater exposure. The competition has expanded into women’s football, and its organization continues to build an increasingly professional experience.

Copa Promesas does not need to grow simply to become bigger.

It is growing to become more meaningful.

And in a sport where every season can mark the beginning of a career, turning a youth competition into a platform that connects competition, development, data and exposure can be just as important as the result on the scoreboard.

Because the next generation of Peruvian football could be playing today. And now, their stories can be seen, too.
